According to the Albuquerque Police Department, 15-year-old Brett Rosenau perished during a SWAT raid. On Thursday, July 7, they declared in a formal statement that the kid had died from smoke inhalation.

However, he was not the intended victim of the police standoff. Police tracked Qiaunt Kelley, 27, to a residence in southeast Albuquerque on July 6, where he had locked himself in. Police information indicates that Brett Rosenau later entered the same house. No matter how many times they were warned, neither of the two left the residence.

Albuquerque police added that in an effort to get Rosenau and Kelley outdoors, the SWAT team dropped powder irritants inside the home using a drone. Only hours afterwards did authorities discover smoke emanating from the area where the fugitive had locked himself. The fire brigade discovered Rosenau dead inside the home while Kelley was being rescued and sent to the hospital for his wounds.

According to a preliminary autopsy report, the fire-related cause of Brett Rosenau’s death was smoke inhalation.

There are demonstrations going on as Brett Rosenau becomes the most recent victim of police abuse.
The police tactics that resulted in the teen’s death last week shook the Albuquerque community. The Albuquerque Police Department engaged in a standoff for several hours while looking for Qiaunt Kelley, a felon charged with violating probation on accusations of armed carjacking, vehicle theft, and two prior shootings. Rosenau perished as a result of a house fire at the conclusion.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue is looking into what started the fire. Chief Medina acknowledged that the equipment utilized to release the irritants into the house might have contributed to the tragic incident. However, according to a police press release:

No fires have been reported in Albuquerque over the many years that APD has deployed devices that are intended for indoor usage to reduce the risk of starting one.

In a statement, Mayor Tim Keller decried the young boy’s untimely death. He stated:

The mother of Brett Rosenau has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the costs of her son’s funeral.
